Enrolment Scheme 1. Purpose and Principles St Bernadette's School is the Parish School of St Bernadette's Catholic Parish, Hornby, Christchurch. The purpose of the Enrolment Scheme is to establish guidelines for the acceptance of pupils into St Bernadette's School within the maximum roll. The Enrolment Scheme will assist the Board, Principal and Parish Priest in dealing with the demands for pupils seeking enrolment at St Bernadette's School.
2. Guidelines St Bernadette's Enrolment Scheme will take into account the following Statutory Acts and Catholic Diocesan Policy. • Private Schools Conditional Integration Act • Education Act 1989 and subsequent amendments • Race Relations Act 1971 • Human Rights Act 1993 • Diocesan Handbook on Preference for Enrolment at Catholic Integrated Schools, and any other Diocesan guidelines.
3. Maximum Roll The current maximum roll for St Bernadette's School is 175
4. Priority in Enrolment Applications for Enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority: First Priority: Given to siblings of current preference students Second Priority: Given to preference applicants for whom St Bernadette's is the closest Catholic School. Third Priority: Given to preference applicants who are St Bernadette's Parish members (ie. those families whose names are on the St Bernadette's Parish roll) but who do not live within the parish boundaries. Fourth Priority: Given to preference applicants who do not live in, or attend, St Bernadette's Parish. Fifth Priority: Given to non-preference siblings of current students Sixth Priority: Given to other non-preference students
5.1 All students will obtain a Preference Card from their Parish Priest, which is then countersigned by the St Bernadette's Parish Priest, Pre-enrolments at the school may be made prior to obtaining a preference card. However acceptance for enrolment at the school is conditional on the issuing of a preference card.
5.2 Once all preference students have been accommodated, non-preference students can be accepted up to 5% of the maximum roll.
5.3 If there are more applicants in one priority group than there are places available, places will be allocated according to the date on which the application was received. If further qualification is required available positions will be decided by ballot.
5.4 An enrolment panel comprising of Parish Priest, Principal and Board Chairperson (or nominee) will determine selection based on the above criteria.
5.5. Each year the Board, on recommendation of the Principal will determine and approve how many places are available for New Entrants (children whose 5th birthday will fall in the next calendar year). This will be decided in November or December each year.
5.6 Enrolments will only be accepted as long as there are places available. Those not accepted can be placed on a waiting list if so desired.
