Kia ora koutou, Talofa lava, Mālo ē lelei, Kumusta,
A warm welcome back to Term Two. The weather is certainly cooling and I hope we get many more of these beautiful Autumn days before winter sets in. If your child is in need of a new warm jacket, come and see us as we have just had a new delivery. The jackets are of no cost to you.
We warmly invite you to attend Mass next Wednesday morning (29th April) followed by our Mihi Whakatau to help us welcome our new families and staff. Afterwards we will have tea and coffee in the staffroom.
You will have received a video message, via email, created by Father Michael reminding us all about the importance of safety in the church carpark. Please take a moment to watch this and help us keep all of our tamariki safe. It is linked below as well.
A reminder to all whānau that the driveway to the staff carpark must remain clear at all times. This is essential for both safety and access.
We continue to look for volunteers to support our road patrol. If you are able to help, once a week, we would greatly appreciate your support. Please consider giving your time, particularly if you are sitting in your car waiting before the bell goes. A huge thank you to those parents who are currently helping us. Many hands make light work!
On Saturday, we acknowledge ANZAC Day, a time for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude for those who have served and sacrificed. As ANZAC Day is Mondayised, school will be closed for instruction.
I wish you and safe and peaceful long weekend and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday!
Each term we will report our attendance data. Check out our improved Term One Results!

Week One Term Two - A Great Start to the Term
We have had a fantastic start to the new term and have settled straight back into our learning. It has been wonderful hearing about everyone’s Easter adventures and sharing these together in class.
We have begun learning about ANZAC Day and why it is important to remember those who have served. The children have shown great respect and interest in this topic.
In Maths, we have been focusing on number order and have had lots of fun creating our own number lines to support our learning. For Religious Education, we have been learning the prayer Glory Be and discussing when and where we pray. We have also continued to explore the Easter story and what it means for us.
A warm welcome to our new students, who have settled in so well. We are excited to have them with us and look forward to sharing their learning journey.
I am looking for parent helpers for Phonics and Reading. If you have some time during the week, we would greatly appreciate your assistance in supporting reading groups and working with students on letter names and sounds. Sessions run from 9:00–9:30am and 11:20–11:50am. If you are able to help during any of these sessions please let me know.
It’s shaping up to be a wonderful term ahead, and we thank you for your continued support.
God bless,
Shelley Sutherland
Waimana Room 2
Mary Bastion and Ellen Miguel
Kamusta? We hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday. It has been a great start to the term here in Waimana, and the children have settled in well.
We are continuing our learning about Easter. We have completed our responses to the "Easter Poem". The students have shown thoughtful ideas and creativity in their work. We are also learning a song about Easter, which the children are really enjoying. You are welcome to watch and enjoy the song together at home. Please see the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If8W9U7a_Fg
In Maths, we are learning about position and direction, including left, right, above, under, and behind. The children are enjoying exploring these concepts through different activities.
In Literacy, we are continuing to build our skills and are now focusing on the /ar/ sound. We also have a new list of speed words and heart words to practise. In our writing, we are working hard to remember to use capital letters and correct punctuation.
This term, we warmly welcome Scottler, Zackeisha, and Zephanie to our classroom. We are excited to have them join us and look forward to a great term together.
We hope you enjoy the long weekend.
Blessings, Ellen Miguel
Te Pūāwai Room 3
Samantha Fourie and Mary Bastion
It has been wonderful to welcome back all our students in Te Pūāwai this week. They have settled in well and are happy and ready for learning this term.
This week in R.E we have continued to discuss Jesus Resurrection and His appearance to his friends and disciples. The children wrote beautiful notes of why Jesus is their friend. We completed our poetry response showing the empty tomb and that Jesus is risen.
In Maths we are practicing addition to 100. This is proving a little tricky but practice each day is helping us to improve this learning.
In Literacy our reading and vocabulary has been about Anzac Day. The children have been very interested about the events that took place in 1915 and why we commemorate this day today especially as Gallipoli is so far away. It has led to some great discussions. We continue to practice 'The Code' each day with silent e as our focus spelling pattern this week.
In Writing we are learning to use adjectives to describe nouns and to make our writing more interesting. We are also learning the difference between our opinions and facts as we prepare to do persuasive writing.
Wishing you all a wonderful long weekend as we commemorate Anzac Day and those who paid the ultimate price. Lest we Forget.
Te Ara - Room 4
Arlene Middleton
What a great start back to Term 2 Te Ara have had! Despite the rain which has meant a lot of inside time, students are settled, and keen to get into some learning.
In Religious Education, Te Ara have been using chromebooks to research the different gospel verses of the Easter story, and comparing the similarities and differences. Through this, they have learnt important typing skills and research skills.
In Maths, we have started algebra. This learning has proved challenging, as we look at number patterns and the matching rule. We have found that finding a rule is not always a simple addition or subtraction sum. We will continue this learning next week.
This week we have been learning about Anzac Day. We have read an excerpt of the poem “For the Fallen”, explored stories about Anzacs, created art, and learnt many new facts about Anzac Day. Some of our art work is below.
For writing, we have been learning about punctuation. This has included capital letters, full stops, apostrophes, commas, speech marks, question marks, and exclamation marks. This learning will be the focus of our writing pieces for some of this term.
We have started reading Charlotte’s Web as our chapter book, and are looking forward to exploring the friendship between Charlotte and Wilbur.
Te Tihi- Room 5
Anita Magele
Ahiahi mārie, Magandang hapon po,
We have had an excellent week in Te Tihi, settling into our new routines. Ākonga have already shown a great commitment to their learning.
We have been doing lots of learning around ANZAC day and incorporating it other areas of learning. For reading, we explored a poem and talked about what life was like for soldiers during war, helping us understand their experiences a bit more. As a class, we created a freeze frame to show parts of the poem, using our bodies to represent key moments and feelings from the text.
For writing, we did lots of writing activities linked to ANZAC day and several students proudly shared family members who were part of the war.
In RE, we have been doing lots of learning around the ascension of Jesus into heaven and what happens when we take Holy Communion. We also learned about the different symbols on the Paschal candle that is used at Easter and what they represent.
For maths, we are revisiting addition and subtraction methods and strengthening our mental methods before we move onto multiplication.
Wishing all our families a safe and restful ANZAC weekend.
Te Rangi- Room 8
Ali Johnson
This week, Te Rangi created some ANZAC art with Mr O'Loughlin.
Te Mārama - Room Six

We were super excited to find out yesterday that we achieved the highest attendance rate in Term 1 with an impressive 94.4%! We’ve earned a trip to Ninja Valley and can’t wait to head there soon!
This week, we have started a focus on rational numbers in maths, revising the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as simplifying and finding equivalent fractions.
In reading, writing and topic, we have been learning about the experiences of ANZAC soldiers and nurses in World War I, including the hardships they faced and how they showed perseverance. We have been writing in response to a prompt about these experiences, using details from texts and videos to support our ideas.
As part of our ANZAC learning, we also spent an afternoon listening to the Last Post and then attempted to recreate it using ukuleles, recorders, keyboards, and glockenspiels. This was quite challenging, but we worked hard to keep in time and play the correct notes, at least for the first part of the tune!
In Religious Education, we have been learning about the Resurrection, focusing on the gifts people receive through Easter, how different cultures celebrate Easter, and how the Resurrection brings hope, peace, and forgiveness, as well as understanding Easter as the most important feast.
On Thursday, a group of students represented St Bernadette’s at the Nga Puna Wai Tournament, playing handball. We had only one training session with Justin from Canterbury Handball last term to learn the rules, so we are especially proud of how well we played as a team on the day. Mrs Lambie was very proud of our teamwork and the way we encouraged and supported other teams throughout the tournament. We had a fantastic experience!
Finally, congratulations to Jex and his team for winning their final game on Sunday, 19 April, and becoming champions of their basketball league!
